What Is the Chainsmoker Cat Anime About?
Chainsmoker Cat follows Yani, a cat-like beastfolk with one particularly persistent problem: she really, really likes cigarettes.
Unfortunately, smoking isn’t her only problem.
Yani struggles with rent, employment, money, cleanliness, motivation, relationships, and the basic responsibilities that come with being an adult. Her apartment reflects the situation pretty accurately. Cigarette butts, trash, clutter, and questionable decisions tend to accumulate faster than solutions.
Friends and family try to help. Yani occasionally tries to improve. Good intentions appear.
Then there are cigarettes.
Rather than sending its catgirl protagonist on a fantasy adventure, Chainsmoker Cat finds its comedy in the mundane disasters of everyday life: getting through work, finding money, dealing with family, maintaining friendships, paying rent, managing addictions, and trying to become a slightly more functional person.
Sometimes Yani succeeds.
Sometimes she needs another cigarette.
Who Is Yani Neko?
Yani is the central character of Chainsmoker Cat and the source of many of its disasters.
She is a cat-like beastfolk recognizable by her feline ears and tail, but the series quickly establishes that being a catgirl is probably the least unusual thing about her.
Her smoking habit dominates much of her daily routine. Attempts to quit don’t tend to last very long, while her lack of money, unstable employment, messy living conditions, and tendency toward questionable decisions repeatedly create new problems.
Yet Yani isn’t simply the punchline.
Her relationships with her sister, friends, neighbors, and other beastfolk give the series much of its personality. Beneath the gross-out jokes and nicotine-fueled disasters is a character who is flawed, frustrating, funny, and occasionally more vulnerable than she wants anyone to notice.
Humans and Beastfolk in Chainsmoker Cat
The world of Chainsmoker Cat is inhabited by both humans and beastfolk.
Yani and several other major characters are beastfolk with visible animal characteristics, particularly feline ears and tails. Humans and beastfolk live alongside one another, work, socialize, form friendships, deal with family, and encounter many of the same everyday problems.
This gives Chainsmoker Cat an unusual setting. The existence of cat-like people could easily be the foundation for an elaborate fantasy story, but Yani Neko largely treats beastfolk as part of ordinary contemporary life.
The strange thing isn’t necessarily that Yani has cat ears.
The strange thing is what she’s doing to her apartment.

Who Makes the Chainsmoker Cat Anime?
Bibury Animation Studios handles animation production for Chainsmoker Cat.
The anime is directed by Taku Kimura, with Takashi Aoshima handling the series scripts. Riki Matsuura is responsible for character design, while Keiichi Suzuki composed the music.
Those choices are particularly important for an adaptation like Yani Neko. Much of the manga’s personality comes not from large-scale action but from expressions, reactions, awkward pauses, dirty apartments, everyday environments, and the contrast between cute beastfolk characters and decidedly less-cute behavior.

Is Chainsmoker Cat Based on a Manga?
Yes. Chainsmoker Cat is based on the Japanese manga Yani Neko (ヤニねこ) by NyanNyanFactory.
The manga began appearing in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine in 2023 and established the characters, relationships, humor, and everyday world later adapted for television.
The manga gives anime viewers an opportunity to explore more of Yani’s life and the larger cast beyond what can be included in individual television episodes.
It also provides the original versions of the stories, jokes, character interactions, and wonderfully unpleasant situations that inspired the anime.

Where Can You Watch Chainsmoker Cat?
Chainsmoker Cat is available on Netflix in supported regions, while broadcast and streaming availability can vary depending on country.
Because anime licensing and regional streaming catalogs can change, our viewing guide tracks the currently available official options rather than directing viewers to unofficial streaming sites.
Why Is Chainsmoker Cat Different?
Anime has no shortage of catgirls.
Yani isn’t quite the usual version.
Chainsmoker Cat takes the visual language of cute beastfolk characters and combines it with cigarettes, filthy apartments, rent problems, bad jobs, financial stress, adult friendships, addiction, laziness, embarrassment, and the consequences of consistently terrible decisions.
That contrast is central to the comedy.
Yani can look adorable while simultaneously doing something disgusting. A sweet friendship can exist alongside selfish behavior. An absurd joke about cigarettes can sit next to a recognizable problem involving money, work, loneliness, or motivation.
The result is a slice-of-life comedy where the “slice of life” isn’t particularly tidy.
Is Chainsmoker Cat Just About Smoking?
No. Cigarettes are the most obvious recurring element of Chainsmoker Cat, but Yani’s smoking habit is really the doorway into a much larger comedy about adulthood.
The series explores work, money, rent, family, friendship, personal responsibility, bad habits, self-control, relationships, and the repeated gap between wanting to change and actually changing.
Yani’s addiction exaggerates many of those problems, but the reason the comedy works is that the underlying situations are often recognizable even to viewers who have never smoked.
